I enjoyed reading about your experience but more than anything about your reflections after a few hours of working in the rice fields. As you say, we usually don’t think about the amount of work that is needed to put food on our tables. We just take that rice for granted and don’t realize that the pound of rice we get off the counter for a dollar is the result of hours of relentless work. If you think about it, it is simply crazy. We pay one dollar for a pound of rice, whereas the farmers most likely get a dollar to produce 100 pounds of rice. It’s a harsh reality we need to consider.
