Traveling soon? Can’t decide between a backpack and rolling luggage? The Osprey Sojourn Backpack might be exactly what you’re looking for!
In the past two and a half years we have traveled to four continents, over twenty countries, and countless cities. When we left New York, we took only what we could carry in our backpacks. They’ve been with us every step of the way and needless to say, over time our bags (and our bodies) have taken a beating.
Recently we decided it was time for an upgrade. Although one of our original backpacks is still in excellent shape, and we have a bit of an emotional attachment to them, our needs have changed. We now want bags that can adapt to any travel environment we might find ourselves in, in the future. When we found the Osprey Sojourn backpack we realized it had everything we were looking for in a new backpack.
Why We Chose the Osprey Sojourn Backpack
We’ve traveled to world-class cities in Europe, tiny towns in Central and South America, and remote villages in South East Asia. Each location demanded a different travel style. When pockmarked dirt roads were the norm, a backpack to transport our belongings was ideal. When moving about the smoothly paved streets of major cities, rolling luggage would have been perfect. So, when we started looking for a new backpack, we wanted it to be versatile and transform to meet our needs in any destination we might visit.
When we came across the Osprey Sojourn rolling backpack we knew it was right for us. The pack’s ability to transform from a traditional backpack to rolling luggage was exactly what we were looking for.
What We Love About Our Osprey Sojourn Backpack
There are so many features we love about the Osprey Sojourn backpack. It is versatile, comfortable to wear, easy to roll, and has a smart design. Additionally, the Sojourn series comes in two sizes, and is extremely well made. Here is everything we love about our Osprey Sojourn backpacks.
Versatility, Comfort, and Smart Design
The Osprey Sojourn bag is the most versatile piece of luggage we’ve ever owned. We can quickly and easily convert it from a backpack to rolling luggage. With those features and the fully padded top and side handles, and the foot grab handle, we have several options on how to transport it when we travel.
Additionally, it is extraordinarily well made. The thick foam and spacer mesh shoulder straps don’t dig in, and the padded lumbar and hip belt evenly distributes the pack’s weight, making it extremely comfortable to wear. The adjustable ventilated mesh back panel also makes the pack suitable for both of us despite our difference in our size.
The Sojourn is also made with organization in mind. The bag’s main compartment is entirely accessible via a large front zip panel. We no longer have to remove everything from our backpacks just to have access to something we’ve stored in the bottom of the bag. The Sojourn also has several storage units that are great for packing our smaller items like socks, underwear, medicine, and toiletries. There are also two zipper sections on both sides of the main interior compartment, two on the inner zip panel, a small zipper panel on the back of the pack, and a larger compartment located on the top exterior of the bag. Additionally, the contents of the bag are securely positioned with two sturdy, locking compression straps with fabric wings that keep everything in place during transport.

Size
The Osprey Sojourn backpack comes in two sizes, 60 and 80 liters. We chose the 60 liter bag because we didn’t want a massive bag with too much space that would tempt us to travel with unnecessary gear. We also wanted to avoid overweight charges when checking our bags at the airport, and didn’t want to put too much strain on our bodies when moving from place to place.
High Quality
The Osprey name is synonymous with quality and their Sojourn backpack is no exception. The high quality synthetic (no animal products, yay!) materials, aluminum frame, durable oversize wheels, ergonomic retractable handle, back suspension, and padded straps all appealed to us. From first inspection we could tell the backpack is incredibly well made, and since the bag is covered by Osprey’s “All Mighty Guarantee” we know that they’ll repair or replace it if the bag fails due to defects.
The one thing we would like to see improved about the pack is the weight. At seven-pounds, 13-ounces, it’s quite heavy for a backpack. Despite that, we’re thrilled with the Osprey Sojourn.
If you’re looking for a new travel bag, it’s an excellent choice we highly recommend for backpackers and flashpackers. For us, its high quality, versatility, smart and comfortable design, and size make it the best upgrade we could hope for.
