I’ve been using glasses since I was 2 ½ years old and I began using lenses when I was 14 years old and I’m now 18. Lately I have been thinking about surgery as well because I love travelling, and using lenses and glasses can easily become an obstacle when you’re traveling, and I’ve gotten so tired of it (and kinda jealous of my friends because they don’t have to worry about it -_- ). I’ve been thinking about South Korea a lot too because I plan on living there when I finish my education in a few years. I was just wandering, what did you pay for your surgery? 🙂 (if it’s okay for me to ask ^^ ) In my country it’s so expensive it’ll be impossible for me to pay it unless I save up for like, ten years. So I just wanted to know whether it’ll actually be cheaper. Thank you!

Hey Nina,
Thanks for your comment, and for reading the article! I was scared of laser eye surgery at first too, but I promise you the benefits are worth facing the fear. There’s actually nothing terror-inducing about the procedure itself, it’s not painful at all and it’s over before your mind even has time to register what’s happening. I believe in you – you can do it!

It would probably be best to time your surgery so that at least your first few monthly check-ups are with the same doctor who does your surgery (so have it a few months before you leave South Korea). After that, though, the purpose of the visits is just to check your intraocular pressure (IOP) and get refill prescriptions for eyedrops, which you can have done by any ophthalmologist. I’m not sure what it would be like to set up appointments like this on the road, it depends where you’re traveling and at what pace. Be sure to get some documentation of your procedure before you leave, if you plan to go this route.

I’m glad you’re considering laser eye surgery! Wishing you luck, whatever you decide.

I’m absolutely PETRIFIED of getting laser eye surgery. I’ve never had anything more than butterfly stitches on my nose as a child. About ten minutes of terror seems doable especially considering all the benefits as a travel and as um, a human!!! I’ve been wearing glasses/contacts since I was about seven, I feel the pain! I keep hearing good things about surgery in SK. I’m still considering it. I would hope those follow-up visits wouldn’t get in the way, though. I wouldn’t be in SK, I would have to get them randomly on the road?! Which seems a little scary. Overall is seems worth it. Thanks!
